Tinhinan at the UN — New York

In April 2026, members of Association Tinhinan took part in the 25th session of the UN Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues (UNPFII) in New York, themed “Securing the health of Indigenous peoples, including in contexts of conflict.” Dr. Mariam Wallet Aboubakrine, President of Tinhinan Canada, spoke on behalf of the association and the Ârramăt Project on the role of Indigenous knowledge in community well-being and governance, while Saoudata Walet Aboubacrine highlighted the role of pastoralist women and girls in peacebuilding, and Imane Ghasala Mohamed joined the Global Indigenous Youth Caucus in addressing the impact of conflict and intergenerational trauma on Indigenous communities. Dr. Wallet Aboubakrine, as co-chair of the Indigenous Coordinating Body on enhanced Indigenous participation at the United Nations, also presented a roadmap for more effective Indigenous engagement in UN processes. Tinhinan further contributed to several partner side events on Indigenous food sovereignty, languages, and traditional knowledge in health. The delegation — Dr. Mariam Wallet Aboubakrine, Saoudata Walet Aboubacrine, Fadimata Walet Abdallah, Imane Ghasala Mohamed, and Leslie Cloud — carried the voices of Indigenous peoples of the Sahel, and particularly of pastoralist women and girls, to the United Nations.
