Expert Workshop on Article 8(j) of the Convention on Biological Diversity

From July 22 to 24, 2025, the Secretariat of the UN Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) invited Association Tinhinan to take part in an international expert workshop held in Montreal, on the unceded traditional territories of the Kanien’kéha:ka and Anishinaabe peoples.

The workshop was part of the new work programme on Article 8(j) through 2030. Discussions focused on the recognition of Indigenous and traditional territories, land rights, community governance models, and the integration of Indigenous knowledge into biodiversity protection policy.

Held ahead of the first meeting of the SB8J (SB8J-1), the workshop brought together representatives of states, Indigenous peoples, and local communities, as well as specialized organizations. It aimed to identify guidance for implementing the work programme and to help prepare discussions for that first meeting.
